Flying Space A

Flying Space A

Space A or Space Available is an available seat on board a mission bound military flight. It is a privilege given to all active duty, their dependents and retired military members once the duty passengers and cargo have been accommodated.

The Categories that determine your order of selection for Space A flights are:

Category 1 Emergency leave
Category 2 Environmental Morale Leave (EML)
Category 3 Ordinary leave
Category 4 Unaccompanied dependents on EML
Category 5 Permissive Temporary Duty and students
Category 6 Retirees

I am only going to talk about being a Category 3 as that is all I have experienced so far as a family of 5.

I am not an expert on Space A flying but we have successfully utilized this privilege for two amazing vacations. The first one was when we lived in Florida; we drove to Charleston, parked our car in long-term parking, flew to Dover Delaware, took a 2 hr taxi to McGuire AFB New Jersey and flew into Shannon Ireland where we spent two weeks vacation. We then commercial flew to Frankfurt Germany where we took a shuttle to Rammstein and spent three days in Rammstein before flying back to Charleston.

The second vacation was from Joint Base Lewis McChord Washington to Hickman Hawaii where we spent 5 days then flew to Anderson Guam where we spent two weeks before flying back to Hawaii waiting two days to catch our flight to Fairchild Washington. We had to overnight Greyhound bus it back to Seattle and get a city bus and a taxi back to McChord to where our car was parked!!

When flying Space A you must have a different mentality than when you just book a regular vacation. Flying Space A requires that you have oodles of patience and flexibility, because it never works out how you think it will and that is what it’s all about. It is not about getting to the destination it is about the experiences along the journey to the destination.

The Golden Rule of Space A is to have the funds available to get your family home on a commercial flight if you are unable to fly home via Space A. If you have the funds then you can use some of those funds to offset the cost of hotels, taxis and rental cars which are inevitable once you are on the adventure.

So how does Space A work?

You need to familiarize yourself with all things Space A – this blog is a basic overview of the whole thing but reading about it and seeing the questions from other Space A’ers will better help you in understanding all the ins and outs of Space A that I don’t cover here.

I recommend you liking ‘Space A Travelers of USA – Forum for DOD qualified’ FB page.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/325711150854371/

You need to read as much as you can under the ‘pinned post’ on the the above Facebook page. It explains everything and I found it immensely helpful.
In one of the posts there is a link to a map of all the airports that have Space A flights flying out of them.

http://spacea.flights/

What is your closest terminal?

You then have to go to all the Facebook pages of those airports – passenger terminals – and like them and follow their flights schedule. For this blog I will use our local Joint Base Lewis-McChord Passenger Terminal. You can type in the name of the terminal and “Passenger” or ‘AMC’ and it will most likely find it.

https://www.facebook.com/mcchordpt/

Most terminals only post flights up to 72 hours in advance so you can monitor the flights and see patterns, frequently, number of seats, destinations.

There are a few terminals that post their schedule a few weeks out, but those are few and far between.  There are also Patriot Express flights.  Patriot Express flights are government contracted commercial flights with a set schedule and set seat number posted monthly.

The 72 Hour Flight Schedule will show the roll call time, the destination, and the number of seats available for all flights in the next 72 hours.
Seats numbers are: F firm, T tentative, SP seats pending or TBD to be determined.
All this information is subject to change at anytime! And we mean at ANY TIME. We went to bed with a flight on the schedule and woke up and it was gone….. plan B kicked into effect.

The 24 Hour Roll Call shows you all the information regarding all the flights that recently took off.
The date, the destination, the number of seats released, the number of seats taken, lowest category accepted, how many passengers competed. This information is great when planning your space a fight.

So you have followed the pages and you have decided to give Space A a shot……. What is the next step?

It’s very simply!!! As soon as the Active Duty goes on leave they submit an email to all the AMC terminals to let them know that they will be utilizing the terminal at some point in the next 60 days. This is most easily done with the ‘Take-A-Hop’ App. You will need to keep a copy of your email as this is your SIGN UP DATE and this becomes very important once you start competing for flights which I will explain later!

http://www.takeahop.com/app/

If you have any dependents 10 or older they will need a dependent ID

If you are traveling abroad all travelers will need a current passport.

The Active Duty member will need a copy of their signed leave paperwork with their end of leave date included.

Now you head to the terminal, about an hour before the Roll Call time that is stated on the 72 hour flight schedule for the flight that you want to compete for. You have all the paperwork, all ID’s, all passports ready. You have your bags packed. I believe the limit is 1 70 lb bag per person but some flights have weight restrictions that they will state on their schedule.
Carry on’s are a regular carry on size. They abide by the same restrictions as regular flights, no liquids, lithium batteries, firearms. Carry on’s are sometimes weighed too. You don’t want to lose out on a flight because your luggage is overweight so I would pack very light as you will also have to transport your own luggage around from terminal to taxis to hotels to shuttles.
Luggage with wheels are a great investment!
We had 3 suitcases and all of us had our own backpacks with our blankets, inflight entertainment & snacks!

Now you simply go to the desk and mark yourself ‘Present’. They will check that all the paperwork is correct and then you wait, you watch everybody coming and going, putting their names down on the present list and you try to figure out if they are retirees, if they are category four, category two – you basically play the mind game! Well that’s what I do, it keeps me occupied!!

When the Roll Call time comes around and the terminal staff tabulate all the information from all the ‘Marked Present’ passengers and release a list in order of category 1-6, each category is in order of sign up date. They just go down the list offering a seat to those whose names are first on the list until all seats are filled. You either get a seat or you don’t, it’s that simple.

What you need to know after you get accepted for a flight?

Congratulations you have been accepted on a Space A flight to your dream destination! Once you are selected you have a seat all the way to the destination on the schedule. If you choose at check in to only go part way and get off the plane then your seat becomes available at that location. That is why the availability of seats is tentative until the flight takes off and they know how many through passengers they have and how many seats will open up!
You will be asked if you want to buy a boxed lunch for $5.75 – say yes! It’s worth is as it comes with all kinds of goodies!! They also have water onboard and most times a snack.
You will have about 1-2 hours wait after you’ve gone through security before you board the plane. I would use this time to call ahead and try book a hotel or rental car. It’s really nice knowing you have a place to stay once you land as opposed to try and figure it out once you get there.

We enjoyed visiting with lots of fellow Space A travelers and picking their brain about their experiences and recommendations. It was invaluable information that we will take with us on our next adventure.

Knowing a little bit about the terminal and it’s surrounding area before you land is key. For example – do they have taxis, do they have car rentals on base, can you walk to lodging, are there shuttles? Most of this information can be found on the free ‘Take-A-Hop’ App, the AMC Passenger Terminal Facebook page, or sometimes pamphlets at each terminal.  I would highly recommend you familiarize yourself with your destination area if you haven’t been there before.  Having the number of a taxi that has base access is also really important. Most terminals have pamphlets with that information for their location as well as the terminals they fly to.

Almost all Space A flights are extremely cold so pack blankets and hoodies. It is mandatory that all passengers wear closed toed shoes. Some seasoned Space A flyers bring air mattresses or sleeping pads because some flights have space for you to lay down on the floor of the cargo hold! They provide earplugs because it is extremely loud, but if you have better ones bring them.
The crews have always been great, even inviting the kids up into the cockpit or down to where the boom operator lies so they get to experience what it is like to be part of the crew.

What you need to know once you land?

Depending on how long you want to spend in that area you may want to keep an eye on the flights leaving if you want to further your adventure. Remember you have a 72 hour heads up on flights on their Flight Schedule.
The time that you land is also quite important. Because if you land in the middle of the night there may not be local transportation available, The terminal may close as soon as the last passengers are off the flight. Arrangements should be made before you take off if possible.

If you’ve had a great time and now you are ready to head home or on to a different location you need to be smart about the likelihood of being accepted onto the next flight. For example, you may not want to check out of your hotel room until you’ve been accepted for the flight and then it’s just a quick phone call to the hotel to say that you’ve checked out. You may not want to return your rental car keys until you’ve been accepted because you may need the rental car to drive in for a few more hours until the next flight or even sleep in if you can’t find a hotel which I know passengers have done!

Now you’re back at the terminal competing for your flight. This time you have a longer time since your original sign-up date this gives you a higher priority within your category. Basically the longer you are on vacation the more likely it is you catch a flight home!!

One of the big issues we came across was we were a family of five needing five seats, we were offered three seats on a flight and two on the next one, we had to decline both. Then all the other families lower in the category also declined the seats as they too needed more than three seats. That’s when the category four, five and six are approached and sometimes category six gets accepted because they need just one or two seats. So on the 24 hour Roll Call report it will show that the flight accepted category six even though lots of category threes had to decline the seats. That Roll Call information is slightly misleading in your preparation.

So there you have it, lots of information on Space A flying. Now you just need to go and try it, the world is waiting!

Please comment with any further input you may have or any questions I didn’t answer!

Guam

Guam

We Made It!!!💜💙💙

Third time’s a charm!! We made it on our third attempt to fly SpaceA to Guam. That’s pretty good during the summer season especially for a family of 5!! The flight was 8 hours and we again were able to camp out on the floor once we reached altitude. We made the mistake of heading to the back of the cargo hold where the cold air is piped in…….. luckily we had blankets but it was a colder than normal ride!!!

Megan was there to pick us up at the terminal. All the kids were excited to see each other and picked up from where they left off. The 1st blood incident was an hour in so not too bad!!! Vada & Ella reconnected their BFF hearts and Soren & the “come on boys let’s do boy stuff” played superheroes! Magnus is the cutest most chill baby, he’d have to be amongst these crazy 5!

We spent the last few days in Guam just hanging out, eating out and laughing our guts out! It has been a trip of a lifetime and we are sad to be leaving but we will take all the memories with us as we try to head home via Space A at stupid a.m. tonight!!! Thanks Megan & Clinton for putting up with us for the last two weeks. Until next time Hafa Adai

Pit-Stop in Hawaii

Image may contain: one or more people, people standing, ocean, sky, cloud, outdoor, water and nature

It was an early wake up to try and ‘compete’ for Space A flights to Hawaii at JBLM. But we successfully made it a onboard a super cool Air Force plane.  Our friend Abby  was there to pick us up and take us to Hale Koa to see if we could get a room……. we didn’t (Plan b) we got an ocean view room next door at the Hilton (using all our Hilton Honors points!!!) The kids had to try out all sources of water so we went to the beach, the pool and the lagoon!! Leif & I had to try out their drinks!!

Image may contain: one or more people, drink and outdoor

We wandered around Waikiki and grabbed some local seafood for dinner from a few food trucks at Pau Hana Market….. so good. It was an early night to rest for more adventures in the morning.

Image may contain: one or more people, sky, ocean, outdoor, water and nature

Super excited to arrive in paradise and stay a few days discovering all that Hawaii has to offer.
Checking State 48 off the bucket list 💙💜💙

Image may contain: ocean, sky, tree, beach, outdoor and nature

Another amazing day in paradise. We had to check out of our room and recheck in because we didn’t book all the nights at one time…. no biggie…. flexibility is key with Space A! And we got an even better ocean view room!!!

Image may contain: one or more people, outdoor, nature and water
We hiked to Likeke Waterfalls where the kids had a dip in the not very warm water! Amazing views on the drive to and from the falls. We had a picnic lunch at Safeway full of local fare, even Mochi ice cream!! We hung out by the pool for the whole afternoon.

Guys……….. dreams do come true…… 😳🐢Ronan, Ella and I just got done swimming with this little guy 🐢 😳

Another memorable day spent in paradise. Thanks to the time difference, I watched the sunrise over Waikiki (I’m never up before sunrise…..ever) we had a picnic breakfast of local ‘scones’ from Diamond Head Bakery thanks to Abs. We boarded a boat out to the submarine launch site…… that was the coolest thing ever! Saw lots of fish, turtles and even a shark amongst the reef of a sunken boat and downed aircraft.

Image may contain: dessert and food
We ate some Spam Masubi for lunch and all liked it!! Ronan, Ella and I went to the reef right outside our Hotel and swam with a sea turtle. We spent about 20 minutes in the water with her. Another family was snorkeling and taking pics/video. When we got out I wrote him a note asking for an underwater pic to be text to me – he sent the awesome 2 minute video (priceless memory)

Image may contain: 1 person, standing and outdoor

Again all water sources were swam in before heading to dinner with Abby, Luke and family at the Yard House. Everyone cleared plates and we headed back to the hotel but not before getting cool light up ‘rockets’ and flying them on the beach.

Space A Life :
We went to bed with 24 seats available on the Guam flight but woke up to only 8 seats available. We headed to the terminal and were #3 on the roll call. The 1st family had 2 passengers, 2nd family had 4 passengers so we were offered the 2 seats but had to refuse them 🙁 ……. again 🙁 After not getting on the flight, plan C (car to cruise around in) kicked into effect! Leif took the bus downtown Waikiki because there were no rental cars available at either base or Honolulu airport 😳. I took the shuttle to Navy Lodge and did a load of laundry!!
Leif was able to rent a Jeep and reserve a room at the Hale Koa!!! Abby gave us a list of things to see and do so off we went!!

Image may contain: 2 people, including Laura Oksendahl, people smiling, flower
He picked us up and we headed towards North Shore stopping at the Dole Plantation for some delicious Dole Whip!

Image may contain: 4 people, including Laura Oksendahl, people smiling, ocean, beach, sunglasses, outdoor, water and nature
We saw the coolest thing off Lanikea Beach, Sea Turtles right on the beach. They were busy eating the algae 5 feet from us!!!! Next we went snorkeling at Shark’s Cove where we were all able to see schools of fish swim all around us. We stopped by Ted’s Bakery for some killer Garlic Shrimp, BBB Chicken, Seafood, malasadas and their famous pie….. all plates were cleared.

Image may contain: one or more people, ocean, sky, cloud, outdoor, nature and water

We the stopped off at different beaches along the drive and checked out the scenery, China man’s hat was a great sight. There was an island off the shore that looked like a turtle so we called it turtle Island!! Leif stopped into Tamura’s Market for some Poke!! Finally making it back to Waikiki at sunset!!

Image may contain: 3 people, including Leif Oksendahl and Laura Oksendahl, people smiling, people standing, ocean, beach, child, outdoor, nature and water
There was no better way to spend our ‘no flight today’ day than seeing the whole island!!

July 25th has literally been the longest day in our history.
Flew from Guam to Hawaii at 6am 7/25.
It took 8 hours.
Arriving at 6pm on 7/24 (20hr time difference) Flying back in time 12 hours!!!
Relived the last 6 hrs of 7/24 again — trippy
Lived 7/25 all over again —-trippier
Basically 7/25 lasted 44 hours!

Image may contain: 3 people, people smiling, people standing

What we hoped to be our last day in paradise was a fun chilled out day. Checked out the museum. Bought floaties (I know……. last day 🙄!) but we got to swim with more turtles and they’ll be used on the plane tomorrow 🤞 We rented a water bike and biked Waikiki Beach! Ate delicious lunch at the Steak Shack and Shaved ice & ice cream for dessert. Swam in the pool before having L&L dinner with Coast Guard friends Ed & Michelle Lewis. Fed some wild parrots, pigs & mongoose in their back yard!

Image may contain: Laura Oksendahl, smiling, sitting

We ultimately waited 2 days in Hawaii to try for the Fairchild WA flight but woke up this morning to find out that there were only 8 seats available 😧. We went to the terminal to compete and they listed all present for all the Mainland US flights – there was 2 category 2 and 4 category 3 ahead of us (6 passengers) 😫
BUT the 4 cat 3 passengers didn’t show up!! 🤗 So the 5 Oksendahl butts were selected and are heading home to Washington after a whirlwind 3 week vacation of a lifetime.

Our final Space A flight was on a KC135, a refueling plane. Ronan and Ella sat in the cockpit for take off and Kian sat with the boom operator! They had the best time and the crew was amazing. They then switched and Kian helped land the plane right at sunset as Ronan and the boom operator watched the landing from the underbelly of the plane. Such a cool experience for them.

Sitka – Alaska

💗Heading back to where it all began. Alaska here we come!!!! 💗

It has been a mission of mine to take my kids to all 50 States. We are checking Alaska off the list. STATE #47 and I’m so excited!!! Leif and I met in Kodiak Alaska 16 years ago and to be able to take the kids back to where it all began for our family was a dream come true.

We have friends stationed there who graciously put up with us for a week while we got out and explored Sitka and the beautiful surroundings.

One of our 1st stos was to check out some local wildlife at the Fortress of the Bear just outside the city. It is a safe haven for orphaned bears who otherwise would die in the wild.

Edgecumbe Volcano overlooking Ella on Sandy Beach AK

We all went fishing off the local dock after dark as that is when the squid are most easily caught. All the kids caught dinner…. Squid….. Calamari……  the sweetest part of the night was Ben teaching Ella how to gut the squid!! The kids and the dads all helped prepare it. Freshest Calamari you could possibly taste and it was delicious.

We had dinner with a Tlingit tribe member whose family had a few Totem Poles along the Totem Pole trail in the Sitka National Historical Park. He was very informative about the complexities of the different tribes and clans in the Native Alaskan culture. It was fun picking out the different clans represented as we walked the trail.

We spent some time hanging out with some of the injured and rehabilitated birds of prey at the Raptor Center. Most of these can not be release back into the wild unfortunately. But it was exciting to be up close and personal with these beautiful birds of prey.

We hiked up by a gorgeous waterfall where Ronan took us up on the ‘Alaskan Challenge’!

OUR BEST DAY EVER!

We spent an hour on the beach watching a pod of whales bubble feeding as close as 40 feet from shore. I seriously can not believe how amazing it was to see and hear these wonderful creatures as they fed and swam so close to us. Their noises reverberates throughout the entire Sitka Sound and gave me chills!

It was girls day and we went discovering an abandoned native cemetery where Princess Thom was buried. We stopped by St. Michael’s Orthodox Cathedral and saw all the intricate decoration.

It was really the icing on the cake to be able to help Joe celebrate his 11th Birthday here in Sitka……… it was a jam packed day of fun! His awesome parents let him skip school………Birthday Breakfast Pancakes, boys went shooting, Frozen Yogurt, whale sightings and an evening spent on the dock catching Squid.

Sunbathing in Sitka!!!

We took a final hike on Indian River Trail where Joe, Ben & Ronan took the Alaskan Challenge!! Well earned $20!!

Our last day included a workout for the kids at an American Ninja Warrior Gym and a beautiful sunset from the beach.

Roadtrip from Jacksonville Fl to Seattle WA

We left Florida on July 30 and drove to Leif’s mom’s house in Aiken South Carolina where we spent a long weekend catching up and being tourists in downtown Aiken. Her boyfriend Philip from France cooked us a beautiful Paella dish that we washed down with some yummy wine. We toured the Aiken County Historical Museum where the kids were fascinated by ‘old time’ items like cash registers and horse drawn fire engines.

We left South Carolina and drove through Georgia and onto Mobile Alabama where we visited the Gulf Coast Exploreum for a few hours so the kids could get their wiggles out before heading to our friends for the night. Got up early the next morning and drove through Mississippi into New Orleans Louisiana where we spent the day discovering all that New Orleans had to offer. We ate Beignets at Café Du Monde near Jackson Square. We walked down Bourbon Street in the daytime we took a trolley ride all around the town and visited the New Orleans Museum of Art. We met up with some friends for dinner that we hadn’t seen in five years! We got an early start the next morning and checked out the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. There was an exhibition on graffiti art which the children found fascinating. We met up with some more friends, who had just relocated from Jacksonville, for some ice cream at the Creole Creamery.

We headed towards Texarkana which is on the border of Texas and Arkansas. We had arranged for a behind the scenes tour of an elephant refuge as a surprise for Ella. She was able to give Dore the elephant a bath and we were all able to feed her and pet her. It truly was one of my most favorite experiences to date.

Close by was the town of Paris Texas where they had a 3 story high Eiffel Tower that Ella was able to climb up on. Now she is more than convinced to travel to Paris France to climb the real thing.

Next up on our adventure was a drive to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. We stayed at a hotel that overlooks the ballpark and there just so happen to be a ball game which we were able to watch. We stayed in Oklahoma for two nights in the part of town called Bricktown. We were able to take a water taxi to a beautiful monument call the Centennial Land Run Monument. It is 47 larger than life cast bronze statues depicting Oklahoma land run participants in 1889. It was a stunning piece. The next day we visited the Oklahoma City Memorial and Museum which was the memorial for the Oklahoma bombing, it too was a beautiful memorial. We also wondered around the Myriad Botanical Gardens before driving along the iconic route 66.

We stopped off at the Cadillac Ranch where there are 10 Cadillacs 1/2 buried in the ground and you can spray paint them with spray paint. The kids had so much fun graffitting the Cadillacs. We also stopped off at a restaurant called The Big Texan where they serve 72-ounce steaks! Don’t worry we didn’t order one.

We got to the midpoint on route 66 which is 1139 miles in either direction to Los Angeles or to Chicago. The journey continues through Albuquerque New Mexico into Arizona where we visited the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert.

We stayed the night just south of the Grand Canyon so we got up bright and early the next morning and headed into a day of exploring in the Grand Canyon – what an amazing amazing place, we all loved it.

The next morning we drove to a place called Four Corners. This is where four states meet, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. I sat right in the middle which meant I was in four places at once! It’s my superpower! Then each of the three kids stood in one state and I stood in the other so all four of us were in four different states holding hands at the same time!

The next day we backtracked and headed towards Denver Colorado to spend some time with Leif’s dad and his wife. We were able to catch up on laundry and eat some home-cooked meals and just enjoy each other’s company. We did make a trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Next, we drove to Billings Montana through Wyoming and spent a week with Leif’s grandma. We were able to visit with Leif’s Grandpa, uncles, aunts and cousins. His uncle even brought us on his boat to his cabin on the lake that had no electricity for a night – it was bliss! We went to the Montana State Fair and spent a few hours riding carnival rides and eating carnival food it was a fun day out.

Next up on our month-long journey across America was a drive on Beartooth Pass with a summit elevation of over 10,000 feet. It was now the middle of August but we could see snow a little off the road but we couldn’t get to it, unfortunately.

We continued on our journey to Yellowstone National Park where we had to give the right-of-way to Buffalo that passed in front of our car and then a few miles later a huge male Elk crossed right in front of us too. We hiked around the park and saw different hot springs, gushing geysers, including its most famous Old Faithful. The diversity of the landscape is simply awesome. We were able to swim in the Yellowstone River right where the boiling water’s from the hot springs enter so it was a natural Jacuzzi and it was really enjoyable.

That night we stayed in a Teepee Tent right outside the park. It had no electricity and it was one of the coldest nights but we all had down comforters and slept well! The next morning we went white water rafting on the Gallatin River and that was another one of our favorite experiences of the summer. We all slept so well again that night.

The next morning we got up and headed towards Coeur D’Alene Idaho and stayed with Leif’s cousin who showed us around and took us out on his boat on the lake for a few hours. It was our last night before heading to Seattle Washington so we went out for the biggest ice-cream dessert I have ever had!!

We arrived into Seattle and stayed at a hotel for a night and then all our household goods were delivered to our new house. So the unpacking and settling in to our new home in the Pacific North West begins…………..

A day in Atlanta Georgia
Our first stop on our cross country trip was Atlanta Georgia. We decided to stay at the Embassy Suites as it was located within walking distance of the 2 things we wanted to see – The World of Coca Cola and Centennial Olympic Park.
The World of Coca Cola is a great place to wander around and learn all there is to know about my favorite drink! There is lots of interactive games for the kids to play on like designing their own bottle. They could also meet the Polar Bear Mascot. We got to check out the famous ‘Vault’ where the secret recipe is kept. The Kids’ most favorite part was the tasting room where they could drink all the different drinks made by Coca Cola from all over the world…..there are over 100!!!

A nice treat was that everyone got their own free souvenir bottle of coke as we left.

Next stop was Centennial Olympic Park – this is a large park in the middle of the city for the kids to run around and explore. There are different water feature that the kids climbed on (not allowed apparently!) There is a fun playground for them to get their wiggles out! And they got to play in the very cool Olympic Rings Water Fountain. We didn’t have any swim stuff with us but we were heading back to the hotel so we let them run crazy in their clothes!

A day in Nashville Tennessee

11755349_10153354767177247_9140718504085661936_n[1]

2nd stop was in Nashville Tennessee. We drove to the Grand Ole Opry and just wandered around – we choose not to take a tour as we didn’t think the kids would be into it! We did however visit The Opryland Hotel and WOW, what an awesome spot to spend a couple of hours. We wandered around their shopping area and bought some frozen yogurts, sat under waterfalls, meandered through their indoor gardens and watched koi fish play.

We drove to our hotel – The Hampton Inn in downtown Nashville. We again choose to stay downtown as we wanted to be able to walk to everything and not worry about parking! First order of business was to get the kids some cowboy / cowgirl boots! There are lots of stores but I had heard of a store where you buy 1 pair get 2 free – Yes you heard GET 2 FREE! And since we have 3 kids it was perfect!! Boot Country on Broadway was where we found the kids there cool boots!

11695748_10204524274767351_5959683374231040524_n[1]

They choose to wear them out of the store! Now that we had the boots we just had to go dancing so we headed to Wildhorse Saloon on 2nd Ave N where they teach FREE line dancing classes to whoever wants to be learn! We also had dinner there too and watched all the dancers from our table next to the dance floor.

11703138_10153354766462247_1197032130244213088_n[1]

They had a live band perform and my littlest dancer loved dancing to the music. We wandered all over town checking out lots of cool stores and listening to live music pour out of all the bars.

Side Note:
‘Blue Star Museums is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to the nation’s active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.’  http://arts.gov/national/blue-star-museums

One of the Museums on the list is the Musicians Hall of Fame & Museum. We trekked up to it and walked around it – the kids were super bored as it was not very interesting for them so we made it a quick visit! We had seen the speeding golf cart taxis all over the city so we called for one to pick us up and bring us back to the hotel. The kids loved the ‘Joyride’ and it was FREE we just had to tip the driver!

2 days in St. Louis
3rd stop was a few days in St. Louis Missouri where we stayed with friends, who had literally just moved there a week earlier! Nothing says military families like inviting your family to stay at their house and them accepting the invite! They were just as excited about discovering the city as we were.
Our first day was spent at the St. Louis Zoo. The best part about this is that it is FREE! There are a whole bunch of different Museums on the site that are also free but we choose just to spend our time at the zoo. The zoo is huge with all the expected animals in exhibit. The highlight was the Polar Bear who was super excited to see Kian’s Cowboy hat and followed it while splashing in the water and giving high fives! The underwater tunnel in the sea lion enclosure was a reprieve from the heat. The penguin exhibit was a cool 45 degrees Fahrenheit!!! The Butterfly garden was a great way to get up close to the butterflies as they flittered by. This zoo is a must see while in St. Louis.

On our 2nd day we ventured to the world famous Arch.11753684_10204538489682715_3402167089794473063_n[1]

We had booked tickets in advance as you can’t book them the day of your visit. The line to get in moved quickly through security. Kian 10 has always had a fear of heights but I think him being the oldest of the 6 kids he plucked up the courage to enter the carriage and it made its way up the inner column to the top. He didn’t like it for a second but he was a trooper! The rest of us enjoyed the views of the city from 630 feet up in the air! We didn’t spend much time in the visitor’s area as we had little kids with us and their mama was waiting on the ground outside!!!

Our next adventure was to the most amazing ‘museum’ I have ever been to – St Louis City Museum. It is not a museum as we know it, it is ‘an eclectic mixture of children’s playground, funhouse, surrealistic pavilion, and architectural marvel made out of unique, found objects.’ We spent hours climbing through Monstrosity the outdoor 6 story maze of rebar tunnels and planes and slides! We ventured inside to the caves and climbed to the rooftop where there is a Ferris wheel and school bus overhanging the building! We made our way to the bottom by sliding down their 10 story slide! There were circus classes and art classes going on. It was every adventurous kid’s heaven and every claustrophobic parent’s nightmare but one not to be missed. A must visit while in St. Louis.

Drive by Kansas City

– We just made a quick pit stop at the Kansas City Library – the famous exterior of the car park is decorated like a book shelf. The Library is in an old bank and thus the Vault is put to good use downstairs! A fun stop for the kids to stretch their legs!

A weekend in Great Wolf Lodge Kansas City
We had heard of this themed hotel and decided to incorporate it into our trip. We checked in early and were able to go to the water park for the day. The kids loved the 3 indoor / outdoor waterslides, the lazy river and the bucket dropping 100’s of gallons of water every 10 minutes! We had a yummy pizza for dinner that we ate water side accompanied by some girly foo foo drinks. We choose to include the breakfast option the next morning and it was a nice addition to the stay. We headed back to the water park for another day of wet fun before loading back up and heading west. I’m glad we experience The Great Wolf lodge but it wasn’t worth the cost and we won’t be staying at one again.

A few days in Denver Colorado
Denver was a fun city for us to explore. We checked out Centennial Center Park where the kids climbed the rock wall and spider webs, swung on swings, dodged the water – they enjoyed getting their wiggles out.

11750625_10153369581717247_993481908687234229_n[1]
Denver Museum of Nature & Science is part of the Blue Star Museum’s program so we decided to check it out. Trying to find parking in their parking garage was terrible, I resorted to stalking people exiting the elevator and following them to their parking spot! Once we got inside the museum we were surprised by how huge it was! We spent the whole afternoon exploring all the different exhibits. The kids loved The Power of Poison and Ronan was asked to help the science teacher in a science presentation. The Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns, and Mermaids was a little weird but I guess that’s why they are so popular. The Prehistoric Journey was really interesting and the kids got to chat to and watch a paleontologist remove dirt from dinosaur bones! Expedition Health was an interactive exhibit where we had to take part in physical activity and it gathered all our stats. We were then able to see just how healthy or unhealthy we were. The Discovery Zone was hand down the most favorite area for all 3 kids. So much for them to get creative and discover through the art of play! Denver Museum of Nature & Science is a must see if you have a few hours to kill in Denver, we will be back as we were unable to see everything that they had to offer!

Park City Utah
The whole reason for our road trip was a Family Reunion in Park City Utah. We stayed at the Double Tree where the reunion was being held and had lots of fun with all our crazy relations. We swam in the pool, had a picnic in the park, had a big family dinner and a few too many drinks in the evenings!
We did go for a fun hike at The Alpine Slide Park close to the hotel and were able to see the beautiful vista over Park City.

11800554_10204602464402043_3632181021738562686_n[1]
The highlight of our vacation was The Olympic Park. It was where the 2002 Winter Olympics were held and it is an official Olympic Training Site.

11800449_10153382634207247_24489546337782622_n[1]

We sat through a 2 hour Hotel Time Share presentation in exchange for 5 Gold Passes to the park – it was so worth it when the value of the tickets was $250!!! We watched athletes practice their jumps and landing in a huge pool – I never thought about them landing in a pool! We then headed down to the Discover Adventure Course where we climbed and shimmied our way to the end. And at the end we all had to Zipline back to the beginning. Such a fun activity for all ages.

11800241_10153382634297247_4217095158113355957_n[1]

Next up was the Alpine Slide. We had to take a very scenic chairlift ride to the top and we rode the Alpine Slide smoothly down, taking in the amazing views of Park City. The boys had a tough time on the slide and ended up slowing down too much, stopping and taking their sled off the track. Luckily Uncle H wasn’t far behind them and helped them back onto the track!

The adults were all able to ride The Extreme Zipline and it was pretty thrilling for a first time zipliner. Only Ronan wanted to do the Freestyle Zipline so the other headed back up to wander around the museum. We spent the whole afternoon at the park but it wasn’t enough time! You need the whole day if you want to take part in everything as the wait times are long and putting on the safety equipment at each activity takes time. All in all this was the most fun day of our trip!

Road trip home
We left Park City Utah and headed for Florida. We planned on driving 8 – 9 hours every day in order to make it home in 4 days. We stayed at hotels with pools and continental breakfasts and rented movies from Redbox and returned them the next day in the next state!! The only place we stopped worth mentioning was Metropolis – Home of Superman – we toured around the little Superman Museum, took pics with the 15 foot Bronze statue and had dippin dots in their visitors center!
